75th Anniversary, 29 July 2010
"Our safe and happy arrival in Cape Town was the end of a marvellous exploit and we had the satisfaction to know it was the first north-south crossing of the African continent. We were fortunate to have seen Africa the way it was, before politicians made our journey impossible. Our journey was at an end. It was Monday 29th July, 1935" Theresa Wallach from The Rugged Road.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the amazing achievement of Theresa Wallach and Florence Blenkiron riding the entire length of Africa from London to Cape Town arriving on July 29, 1935, Panther Publishing have brought out an updated revised edition as a hardback book. The story itself remains the same of course, but there is more on the amazing life of Theresa Wallach in the USA, and some additional photos, including some of the bus across the Sahara ahead of which they had to keep or risk serach parties being despatched at substantial cost!
This new hardback edition is for all those who prefer books with a hard cover. Apart from the new material the text has been tidied up a bit to remove the odd error that had somehow crept in to the first edition and to improve the size and quality of the photos. Only 100 copies of the 75th anniversary edition have been printed: after they are gone there will be no more hard bound volumes of the Rugged Road.
Each one is individually signed by Barry Jones, the editor, beautifully produced and bound. These are sure to become a collectors item in the future: this is after all not just an epic tale of motorcycle adventure but has also become one of the greatv classic motorcycle stories.
